Trojan Soundsystem V Simbad/Melo/Rob Li @ Cargo 25/1/08

Trojan Sound System comprises of selectors Earl Gateshead and Daddy Ad and vocalists Superfour and Chucky Banton. Formed in 2004 from London Sound System legends, to represent the label in England and throughout the World. The Sound System has already had hugely successful shows as a single entity and with the greatest names in reggae.

Simbad is based in East London working with many people and releasing under names that include Marathon Men, Les Ensemble, Les Baron and a load of others. He is Raw Fusion's latest signing and is currently launching his debut album 'Supersonic Revelation' with help from collaborators Melo and Rob Li. The album is already out in Japan and has been for some time. According to http://www.groovedis.com/ Supersonic Revelation, "is a classy album of real calibre, which has got a fresh new angle on deep soul."

The night was billed as a head to head between the Swedish funk jazz label and the Trojan Sound system. Unfortunately if it was, I must have not noticed. The sound was good and every now and then one would be drawn towards the arch into the main room by breakbeats. Simbad is good and has lots and lots of potential. They looked like they were having fun behind the decks, hardly mixing with headphones yet sounding raw enough without the need for precision. Simbad is bad ass, he just needed to play for longer.

An alcohol fuelled night with probably the worst toilets in the world. It all ended as we watched girls hurrying out of the main entrance to vomit themselves back to normality. Ahh... the joys!

Skull Juice 'Serious Fun'

The first official mix by DJ duo Skull Juice; AKA Alex Egan and Benedict Bull. Edited by Alex Egan 'Serious Fun' was completed in March 2006 and the free CD was available from 6/6/6 as the first Shock Horror Records release.

Just look at the track list below. This is like time travel! An excellent set with some brilliant tracks and mixing that only most DJs dream of doing. Really cool mash ups that take you from one musical era to the next and then back again. House, electro, breaks, hip hop, pop it’s all here, I have probably missed few genres but to be totally honest if you are a serious listener you will appreciate this. It’s copyright mayhem at its best.

Dangamouse Nu Secta (Dubstep mix)

Dangamouse aka Barry Glen plays sets that are influenced from dubstep, hip hop, electro, Drum n Bass and breakbeat. At a young age he cut his djing teeth on the hardcore rave sounds of the early nineties, and now projects include radio shows on Nu Skool Breaks Radio, and Tongue n Groove Show on Subcity Radio. The last year has been the most exciting and eventful for Dangamouse, with 2 successful residencies, the aforementioned radio shows and a multi deck project with BloodRunCold & MC RST, plus playing at some of the biggest clubs in Scotland, Dangamouse's career is steadily building momentum, and is showing no signs of stopping any time soon.

So the mix? It starts with Dead Man Walking by Milanese ft Virus Syndicate, and if you haven't listened to many dubstep mixes, in a listening sense, you will be trying to find your feet. It’s the start of the mix and if you begin by listening to it defensively you will ultimately end up disliking it. This is just an opinion! Yes it is intrusive, menacing, whatever! But really not unlistenable, more of a case of listening to what Barry Glen is playing. Music may be regarded as a form of expression, an art, and as such it will draw on your emotions, as a listener you also have to play your part.

By the time Dangamouse mixes in Future World by Protocal X, and Menace To Society by Tones you begin to feel an energy in the mix. There are builds happening all the time but not in the same sense as they would in a trance mix or house mix. It is a lot more disjointed and at times experimental eclectic but Dangamouse does an exceptional job of piecing things together. Tracks like Hydro by Benga & Skream demonstrate this, keeping the listener listening and engaged.

Soon enough the mix starts to picks up, or at least it feels that way, and everything that you may have initially questioned starts to fall into place. The orchestral sound of Bumbaclart Riddim by Dubchild giving the mix a much richer sounding texture and depth reminiscent of techno, or motion picturesque. I certailny heard a lot of electro elements as well. Lightning by Skream is a brilliant track and a point in the mix where you start to bear the fruits of your listening labour. Tracks like Afterglide by Rusko bringing a more energetic even a party element to the mix.

By now you can feel the energy, Brood by Boxcutter and a remix of Resos Murder track allow you to get absorbed. Whatever it is, the direction, the ambience of the mix, the great production of all the tracks used, the flow and diversity of influences, styles and sounds, it all works well even when you reach full circle with Hold On.

This mix has been kicking about for at least 6 months now, maybe more, download it from tongue n groove and see for yourself! Its free and a f**king good mix, what else could you want?

I music therefore I am

After 8 years of working in my current job it suddenly dawned on me that I am unhappy. It has always been in the back of my mind but recently it has slapped me in the face and shouted loudly, 'what are you doing man?'

Truth be told I really have nothing to complain about. I live in the UK, I have a roof over my head and hardly go hungry. I take most things for granted, I don't have to walk 10 miles a day to get water or anything like that, but I reckon I have missed the point. I guess I have just been to busy to actually step back and see that what am doing lacks any kind of passion. All that is another whole story though!

What it boils down to is doing what I love. That thing that I am nuts about is music. Music is everything to me, when I buy music I admire the artwork, I read the credits, I listen to it, love it, rewind it, rewind it and play it again 500 times.

I can't really explain it. Language Block is to let me do all the things I always wanted to but thought I couldn't.
